  Destinations

We have selected four superb destinations to choose from: Alnwick Castle & Garden, Dumfries House, Drumlanrig Castle and Floors Castle.

These trips differ from our regular tours in that we only go to the one place for the day, rather than touring around an area and visiting several different places. This is due to two main considerations: firstly, the driving time it takes to reach the destination, and secondly, you will undoubtedly want to spend as much time as possible at the destination itself, enjoying the facilities there to the full.

  Alnwick Castle & Garden

Alnwick Castle is in Northumberland, in north-east England, and is the residence of the Duke of Northumberland. The castle itself is a very impressive fortress-like structure and is full of beautiful interiors containing breathtaking artworks, wonderful furniture, collections of lovely ceramics, the list goes on. The Garden at Alnwick covers a large area and is beautifully planted, with lots to see including a huge cascading water feature. Scenes from the Harry Potter movies were filmed at Alnwick Castle, which doubled as Hogwarts, and the Harry Potter connection is maintained through daily tours, broomstick training sessions and performances by look-alike actors.

  Dumfries House

Dumfries House, in south-west Scotland, was once the home of the Earls of Dumfries, and is famous for its collection of original Thomas Chippendale furniture. The house has only been open to the public for a short while, and was saved for the nation by Prince Charles, who stepped in at the 11th hour when the house and contents were put up for sale by its owner, the Marquis of Bute. Christie’s had published the sale catalogue and the removal vans were literally waiting outside! The house and its furnishings have now been beautifully restored, and they look in as good a condition as when the house was newly built.

The whole estate surrounding the house is also a delight to wander around, with several  architectural features, many mature trees and various different garden areas to be enjoyed.

  Drumlanrig Castle

Magnificent Drumlanrig Castle, in Dumfries & Galloway, is the home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.  Known as the Pink Palace, because of the colour of the sandstone it is built from, the impressive exterior is complemented by the magnificent interior, with its grand reception rooms, magnificent staircases, ornate period features and cosy parlours. The exquisite rooms themselves are home to stunning paintings, tapestries and objects d’art and many pieces from the internationally acclaimed Buccleuch Art Collection.

Outside, you can walk around the extensive grounds and admire the lovely gardens surrounding the house which feature beautifully planted flower beds.

  Floors Castle

Floors Castle, near Kelso, is the family home of the Duke of Roxburgh. The original castle was transformed into its present very grand Jacobean style of architecture when it was re-modeled in the 19th century by William Playfair. The rooms contain beautiful artworks, including paintings by famous artists, Chinese porcelain collections, Gobelins and Brussels tapestries, French furniture, family heirlooms, historical items, statues, in fact treasures of every description.

Outside, you can walk around the extensive grounds which extend along the banks of the River Tweed and walk over through the trees to visit the lovely walled garden and see the Millennium Parterre.
